Pennies for Elephants — Pennies for Elephants is a picture book by Lita Judge, based on the true story of how thousands of children raised the money to buy the elephants for the Boston zoo in 1914. One of the characters is a newsboy, so the author’s website for the book includes a collection of Lewis Hine’s photographs of boys and schools selling newspapers.

Build a Mill Workers’ Monument — By Gerard R. Bourassa, South Coast Today, April 28, 2009

Bourassa wants New Bedford to commission a monument to the city’s mill workers, and suggests that a statue of a child mill worker based on one of Lewis Hine’s photographs would be appropriate.

Bourassa writes:

A talented sculptor could produce a work that New Bedford could use to send a message to the world: “We acknowledge that the use of child labor was an absolute disgrace when Lewis W. Hine, armed with his camera, was fighting against it in our own city. Child labor whenever it takes place throughout the world today is still an absolute disgrace and should be eradicated from the face of the earth.”

“It satisfies my historical curiousity and I’m doing a service to history,” said Manning, comparing it to his earlier books of interviews with North Adams residents about the city’s industrial age. “I get a tremendous amount of enjoyment doing something I love doing.

“I like to tell stories … I like to tell real stories.”
